Nominee Photograpphy
Photography is a broad medium, and many people from a wide range of backgrounds use it for a variety of reasons – and, increasingly in recent times, an automated protagonist: artificial intelligence. The medium's promise of truth is less credible than ever. Against this backdrop, I would like to not just add photographs to this canon of imagery, but to question the medium itself and the relationship between image and reality, and between image and word. Fake sunsets and self-constructed gardens of paradise, all these images are supposed to touch the viewer emotionally and simultaneously the rational question of the trustworthiness of a photographic image.
The artist Jens Masmann lives and works in Munich since he finished his degree at the Photography School in Munich and after a two-year stay in London, UK. His main medium is photography. Following an intensive photographic examination of urban space and built urban utopias, the relationship between image and reality and the crumbling promise of truth by the medium photography, is now the main topic of his work. In 2013, he was one of the founders of the self-publishing platform million books. The artist book is an important channel for communication in his work. His books are included in photobook collections at Tate Modern London, the library of the Fotohof Salzburg, Photomuseum Winterthur and many other international institutions, as well as being presented in numerous exhibitions surrounding the topic of photobook in Europe and Asia. From 2014 to 2018, Jens Masmann taught photography at the University for Applied Sciences in Augsburg and in Munich and as a guest at the LSBU London. 2016 Jens Masmann was awarded a residency in Lisbon as part of the European project "Flaneur – new urban narratives" – financed by the EU and UNESCO.
